Safe Plate Day - 24 March 2024
Manningham Neighborhood Watch conducted a Safe Plate day on Sunday 24 March 2024 at Doncaster Park and Ride.
This project involves replacing the screws in car number plates with theft-resistant one-way screws to discourage thieves from stealing the plates.
Stolen number plates can be used in other crimes.

We processed about 120 cars over the day.
The event involved volunteers from Manningham NHW, NHW Boroondara and the Manningham SES, all working together on this great community project.

Safe Plate Days are generally held twice a year.
Neighbourhood Watch for Teenagers Project
For about four years, Manningham NHW worked with Middle School students (Years 9 and 10) from Doncaster Secondary College to find ways of getting crime prevention and home security messages across to teenagers.
The students involved in the project published articles on crime prevention in the school newsletters and crime prevention messages for display on TV monitors throughout the school.
The project had the support of both the Deputy Principal and the Middle School Co-ordinator. In addition to the benefits gained in getting students to prepare NHW messages that strike a chord with teenagers, the senior teachers saw value in the students getting experience in working as a team and wherever possible, managing the project themselves.

In 2019 the students identified particular safety concerns and worked on ways to address them. Their focus related to keeping teenagers safe when they are home alone. they had a number of suggestions on information that NHW can provide to people of this age group to make them feel and be safer when they are at home alone.

In late 2019 the students produced a crime prevention video for teenagers. The video, "Lights On" can be viewed by clicking this link: Video

Unfortunately, the project had to be suspended when the COVID-19 pandemic occurred.

Second Edition of the Popular Junior Watcher Activity Book Published
Most crime prevention material prepared by NHW is aimed at adults and there is almost no crime prevention information for children. In 2012, Manningham NHW developed the Junior Watcher Activity Book for children in Grade Prep to Grade 2. The book was produced to teach younger children about home safety and crime prevention.
Parents of children in the target group also learn about home security, crime prevention and NHW by taking an interest in their children's work on the contents of the activity book.
The book has been used widely in Victoria and inter-State with nearly 30,000 copies being printed. A survey of schools when the book was first distributed indicated that the book was well received by the students and used by teachers in some primary schools to support subjects in the curriculum. mainly in Victoria.
The second edition of the activity book has slightly larger text which gives more room for the writing produced by young children. There are also some extra challenges included in the book.

Secure Your Car Number Plates at our Safe Plate Days
Almost half of the recent Manningham Police reports on Theft from Motor Vehicle incidents have involved car number plates being stolen. The stolen number plates are then fitted to cars that are used in other crimes.
To reduce the theft of number plates they can be secured with theft resistant, “one-way” screws. The screws have heads that allow installation with a normal screwdriver but are very difficult to remove without special tools.

Two Safe Plate Days are planned for Manningham in the next few months. Information on these is shown below
