Information on crimes and their prevention, and other safety tips, which are particularly relevant to Manningham are provided below.

Theft from Motor Vehicles

One of the most prevalent crimes in Manningham is Theft from Motor Vehicles (TFMV).   This involves thieves breaking into a vehicle and stealing property.  The offence also includes the theft of vehicle number plates.

There are a few simple measures that you can take to reduce the chance of becoming a victim of this offence.

  • Lock your car whenever you leave it, even if you will only be away for a short time.

  • Remove all valuables from the car when you leave it.  If this is not practicable, hide the valuables in the boot before you get to the parking spot.  (Someone could see you hiding your valuables if you do this after parking your car.)

  • Fit your number plates with theft-resistant one-way screws.  (The next fitting day for these screws is on Sunday  18 November 2018 at the Doncaster Park n Ride.  If there is a demand for this service, a Safe Plate Day, where these screws are fitted may be held earlier.   Email a request for these screws to: manningham.nhw@gmail.com)

  • When you park your car at home, leave it off the street, preferably in a locked garage.

  • Hide small change kept for parking meters.  Even this can be enough to encourage a thief to break into your car.  The amount stolen may be a small but the cost and inconvenience of replacing a broken window can be significant.

  • At a service station, lock your car when you go to the counter to pay for your fuel.

  • Tradesmen should place their work tools in a secure box or remove them from the vehicle when leaving it overnight

Care for Community Property

Whilst we normally make a conscious effort to safeguard our homes, cars and personal belongings, who looks after the community property such as schools, parks, churches or Council buildings.  For periods of time, these facilities are unused and so there is nobody on site to observe any illegal activity.

These activities can include vandalism and damage, and in the case of buildings, a break-in and the theft of items from the buildings.

If you live near one of these properties, please keep an eye on them and immediately ring the Police on 000 (Triple Zero) if you see any suspicious activity in the vicinity.

House Numbers

Many of the house numbers in our area are difficult to see. No doubt the
residents can find their home on a sunny day or a stormy night. However, how
easy would it be for the police or an ambulance crew to find your home in an
emergency?

Go outside both during the day and at night, and check whether your house
number would be visible to the crew of an emergency vehicle, with possibly only
headlights to provide illumination. Remember that you know where to look for
the number (if one exists), whereas the crew of an emergency vehicle wouldn’t!

A Manningham City Council Local Law requires your house number to be clearly
visible. If you have any doubts, install reflectorised numbers at the front of your
property NOW! You never know, your life may just depend on it.
